Lightweight models and cost effective scalability: YouTube

15 May

This is the last blog post of the 8 core patterns in web 2.0 ingredients. This time I would like to talk about Lightweight models and cost effective scalability. Lightweight models and cost effective scalability or a simple short “Doing More with Less” is the strategy to deliver products to the market faster and cheaper without sacrificing future growth.

The old business model used to be the form of investing the large amount of money to get started business but no one can guarantee you will gain the profit or failure. However, the new business model in the modern world is not depended on large budgets or large development team anymore. It is because the lightweight models can be applied to reduce the risk and many traditional costs.

YouTube can be one of the successful sites that applied the Lightweight models and cost effective scalability. YouTube is a website built for Internet users to share video clip. More than 65,000 videos have been uploaded on YouTube every day. When many users view the video on YouTube, YouTube has to deal with the bandwidth problem from their services. As it happened, YouTube, which bought by Google in 2006 decided to use the outsource service provided by “Limelight Networks” instead. Limelight is the fast-growing content distribution network. It is also handle video streaming for YouTube and that mean YouTube was able to scale its business easier than if it had attempted to manage these services in-house.

Moreover, YouTube uses business revenue model to maintain effectiveness as the business grows. Revenue model or the advertising model is enabled advertisers to place the commercial in the “ad breaks” within an online stream of a video. YouTube also put the enforcement of a 10 minute time limit on video clips. If your video content is greater than 10 minutes, you must use a premium service.

So as you can see, YouTube has applied the lightweight business models and it certainly looks like a successful business model. However, YouTube is still growing. This may be we can see more options in YouTube revenue models in the near future.

Leveraging the long tail: Stream

14 May

I believe some of you may prefer to buy the product online than offline. It is because you have wider choices when shopping online and some products can only find in the online world. Perhaps this is because the retailers may not have enough space for all brands or low demand products. On the other hand, the online stores can stock the low demand product and broader brands with infinite space and sell it whenever you want it.

Leveraging the long tail concept refers to the advantages of being on the internet that give you the infinite shelf space, cost advantage and ability to focus on small market. With the long tail concept, Internet can make the hits to niches and offer significant market opportunities from a wider audience.

The example of the long tail strategy is Stream. Stream is focus on game entertainment. Stream offers more than 1,100 games to purchase, download and play from any computer. If you compare to the retailer such as EB games, they can offer around 100 titles and only the popular one.

Stream uses leveraging the long tail strategy since the users sign up to the page. Stream provides the wide range of self service tools for users. They allow users to manage profile and other settings to give their user the greater control. Moreover, the users can discuss or ask their peer technicians for knowledge sharing via stream forum that can be reduced the support cost.

As the products in Stream trades in the digital content and send over the internet to customer, it does not have a cost of delivery like the physical shops. Also, Stream uses consignment-style models. This means Stream pays for products only after they are sold to customer.

Furthermore, algorithmic data management uses in Stream to match supply and demand. As the numbers of products are expand. This helps customer to find a product of similar interest “customers who bought this also bought x”.

In conclusion, leveraging the long tail concept goes around the web 2.0. It is crucial to reach out the long tail not just the head. Stream has been used this pattern to give advantages to their customer over the physical shops. Stream seems to sells their products in game markets but their selling goes on further and that is how leveraging the long tail works in Stream.

Perpetual Beta: TweetDeck

4 May

In web 2.0, the software is improved overtime without no installation or no upgrades needed. When devices connect to the internet, the software becomes the services no longer product anymore. Also, the new features release often to respond the user’s feedback and to package bug fixes. All that I mentioned are part of the “Perpetual Beta” pattern.

One examples of this practice is TweetDeck. Tweetdeck is a personal real time browser which is very useful way to connect with your contacts with Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Foursquare, MySpace and more. If you want to follow your friend on these sites, may be Tweetdeck will be a page that you will open all day long.

Video: introducing desktop Tweetdeck

Tweetdeck is one of the most popular twitter clients, uses Twitter API to send, receive tweets and view profile. It separates the page into the pane and shows what you want to see at once. You can split the main feed (all tweets) into specific topic or group that is more easily managed. After you create the additional column, it will automatically update to keep you follow the twitter threads easier and more enjoyable.

There are so many updated versions of Tweetdeck since it was launched in 2009. Tweetdeck incrementally releases new version and gains the feedback from the users as a co-developer. In addition, Tweetdeck uses Tweetdeck champions via their platform for the users to be part of a group of testers for new features. Every time a user uses Tweetdeck they may be a real time tester and co-developer of new features and services.

Tweetdeck is still ongoing developed, especially in other devices such as Android. Now Tweetdeck is available to download in Desktop, iphone, ipad and Android. Moreover, on May 2, 2011 Twitter just bought Tweetdeck so without doubt that Tweetdeck will become an official Twitter Application.

Therefore, TweetDeck is currently one of the best applications that deal with managing multiple social-network accounts and definitely very useful tools for you to monitor and enjoy your social life.

2 May

The life is much easier with the part of web 2.0 technology. Software above the level of a single device can be seen as today we can work or access to the internet from many devices other than only computer. From my point of view “Software above the level of a single device” defines as a word “synchronized”. It is because the synchronization is allowed software can be worked in one account with too many devices.

One of the introducing applications with the topic of Software above the level of a single device is Evernote application. Evernote is a fascinating note taking application that allows you to store your note whatever from web pages, photos, text notes (also word document) or even audio files. Rich User Experiences from RIA technology

4 Apr

Nowadays, many web applications have functionality as our familiar traditional desktop applications. This is why the users as we are couldn’t notice that web 2.0 technologies have combined online and offline world together. Moreover, we can see all interaction designs are on the web and that is why all new innovations are online.

Rich internet application (RIA) is a key element of web design as we have seen recently. RIA offers much better user experience. They can be faster, more engaging and much more usable. That makes RIA Technologies like Ajax, Silverlight, Adobe AIR, Flash and JavaFX are growing among web applications instead of stuck with HTML like traditional applications.

The common features of RIAs can be seen as

• improvement of user directly interacts with the interface (drag and drop)
• part of page is updating (without requesting the new page)
• feedback or error messages appear within the pages

The one example of website that uses RIA technologies is They work with Adobe Flash/Flex technology to display full screen flash contents and make multimedia mood tone. MoodStream will generate a fresh stream composed of images, songs and video footage from the Getty.

Web 2.0 with Applications Remixability

2 Apr

The evolution of the web is increasingly developed since dynamic web, server/database driven until more complex of program or called web app. Today, most web app uses application programming interface (API) to create mashups for its site that has more than hundred of online APIs to choose from.

According to O’Reilly and John Battelle

“Web 2.0 technologies tend to foster innovation in the assembly of systems and sites composed by pulling together features from distributed, independent developers”

In my opinion, innovation in assembly is a remixable software and API is like a toolbox that attaches in the third party website and create variety features inside the web app.

Website is one of the webs 2.0 that offers an API for the third party. The site Eventful itself is the world’s largest collection of events and also a great way to track events, venues, and performers based on location and preferences.

Eventful APIs allow users to search the site database and follow up on upcoming interesting events or concerts. “ is built upon a unique, open platform that enables partners and web applications to leverage Eventful’s data, features and functionality via the Eventful API” (, 2009).

Moreover, Eventful uses a simple service called Restful API to provide many ways to search through eventful events, venues, performers, demands, calendar, groups, and users. Responses are formatted in either XML, JSON or YAML.

Eventful APIs are free of charge but for future might be charged fees to use Eventful’s services.

The sample of Eventful API is Events near you tracks the event all over the world from Eventful, Meetup and Upcoming APIs. While the website combines with GoogleMaps API to identify the events location.

Although, the numbers of API around 3086 API were used to create 5712 mashups today (programmableweb, 2010), these numbers will continue to increase as long as human is ongoing developed new application on cyber world.

We couldn’t deny that data is important for web 2.0. “Data is the next intel inside” refers to valuable of data inside of the web application or it might be said that “infoware” is more significant than “software”.

It is time to introduce web 2.0 which based on topic “Data is the next intel inside” and focused on movie or on-screen entertainment like “”. This site will bring you massive of movies, series or TV shows information.
